I was assigned the task of writing an opponent’s report for a student thesis – it was a building for Prague’s Old Town Square composed entirely of scaffolding. The idea itself captivated me: “Couldn’t it somehow work to create scaffolding like in the Middle Ages, entirely of wood?” The system is based on special metal connecting elements and a method in which the entire structure is tied together by a gridwork of steel cables, which also serves as bracing. Disassembly is absolutely simple: all you need is to loosen the steel cables and at that moment the entire building system can be taken apart piece by piece and removed. New construction requirements bring with themselves a strange new aesthetic; crucially important was the dialogue between the building and the garden, which were created in parallel. The result is a kind of Zen view of the house, of its inhabitants and the natural surroundings.
